SafetyOn Technical Support

SafetyOn has enjoyed an outstanding performance record, following along in the tradition set by Lightworks Interactive for such immensely successful titles as "Hazardous Materials: Managing the Incident". But with the incredible number of different computers, drives, video cards, operating systems and so on that can be found spread on the desktop of the average computer user, it is inevitable that the occasional difficulty may crop up somewhere. As such, we will be maintaining this page to document any known problems that arise, with detailed steps on how to make a fix. This should be your first line of defense and serve as a 24-hr help desk for using SafetyOn. Please look through the notes below and see if the answer you need is already here and waiting for you. If you still require assistance, please feel free to drop an email to info@gunsoft.com and we will respond to you as quickly as possible. We are committed to the finest in quality and the utmost in customer service.

Problem Description: I load my student record but nothing happens.

Answer: Well, yes it did but it just doesn't look like it. In a limited number of initial SafetyOn CDs, we have seen the "Load Student Record" command appear to do nothing. In actuality, it DOES load the record, but there is no visual indicator. You simply need to then click the "Start" button after loading your record to move to the program. You will then see that all of your progress lights are set to match the student record. We apologize for this minor confusion and the cause has been eradicated so very very few people should see it. But we are thorough, so it is documented here!

Also, please note that you do not need ANY extension tagged onto the end of your student record file. Just try your name or something similar that you will remember, and don't bother with a ".EXT" type extension at the end of the filename.

A couple of customers have experienced a problem with the digital video clips playing in SafetyOn. If you note this, they are generally due to problems related to the installation and set-up of Quicktime 2.1.2. Here are some generic QuickTime troubleshooting steps. These have been just about 100% successful in resolving any video playback issues.

1) Re-run the SETUP.EXE program. Select the option to install Quicktime, and continue. A dialog box should come up recommending a search for existing versions of Quicktime installed. Allow this to occur. If it finds any previous versions, delete them. Quicktime will then be installed fresh from the CD.

2) Try running with a different monitor bit-depth (the number of colors displayed). SafetyOn runs best on thousands (16-bit) or millions (24-bit) colors. This information is accessed through the Start button, by navigating to Settings>Control Panels>Displays.

3) If the problems persist after a fresh Quicktime install, you can help to further diagnose a possible problem by attempting to play a movie external to SafetyOn. An application file called MoviePlayer will be installed along with Quicktime. It allows you to play Quicktime movies.

Use your Program Manager (My Computer Icon) to navigate to the SafetyOn CD-ROM drive. On that drive you will find a folder called VIDEO. Open VIDEO, find the file 1.MOV, and double-click to launch MoviePlayer. Note whether the movie plays clearly through MoviePlayer, or if the problem persists.

If running the software under Windows 2000 or XP the VR section on the Revovler and Semi-Auto VR, Shooting Positions, NRA Range, USPSA Range, IDPA Range and Flashlight Techniques probably won't run properly. Use the process described in the paragraph above to access MOV clips #3,5,12-22,31,36-41, 42-45, and 53-55. This will allow anyone with a software problem to view the entire SafetyOn content. You may need to download the latest version of QuickTime (6.5.2) (free) from the Apple website (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/) in order to run the clips.

4) If the movie won't play inside or outside of SafetyOn, then there is probably still a set-up related problem within Quicktime. Using the Start button, navigate to Settings>Control Panels>Quicktime32, and open Quicktime32 by double-clicking. The SETUP tab for Quicktime should appear. A button should also appear called Verify Setup. Click on this button and check for any errors.

At the bottom of the window, click the MORE button to get additional tabs at the top. Select the VIDEO tab. Under the heading Optimization: Draw Method, there should be several choices. These generally range from the fastest possible (at the top of the list) to the slowest, based on your equipment. It is possible that the Quicktime installation did not select an appropriate choice for your hardware. Begin selecting a progressively lower driver in the list, then use the APPLY button at the bottom of the screen. Test SafetyOn with each setting until the problem is resolved.

If these steps do not solve the problem, it is possible that other software that loads during boot-up could be the problem. If possible, try running SafetyOn on another computer to verify that you copy is working properly. If so, it might be necessary to unload some of your boot-up software. Since each PC tends to be unique, please consult a qualified computer technician for assistance if you suspect some form of hardware problem with the computer itself..
