"In a single word... awesome! SafetyOn answered many of my own firearm safety questions in a succinct, highly visual manner that was both interesting and informative. This is the perfect training program for any man or woman who is interested in firearm safety or personal defense but is uncomfortable asking. As an elected State Representative, I am very well acquainted with the urgent need for safe and responsible gun ownership in this country. In my opinion, SafetyOn is the most realistic, in-depth, and compelling program available to anyone who wants to know how to be safe around a firearm." The Honorable Suzanna Gratia Hupp State of Texas House of Representatives |

"Finally, a cutting-edge training aid suitable for training students at any level! Whether I am training first time shooters or experienced police officers, conducting one-on-one training or in front of a class of fifty, SafetyOn allows me to show graphically and in detail concepts that were impossible to convey with simple videos, slides, or demonstrations alone. Of all the training aids I have seen, SafetyOn is without a doubt the most versatile. (And as a professional civilian and law enforcement firearm trainer, instructor trainer, and as head of the NRA's Training Counselor Program, I have seen a LOT of firearm related training aids!) Comprehension of the material is made easier and faster when SafetyOn is incorporated into your classes. The quality, creativity, and interactivity of the graphics grab the students' attention holds it. SafetyOn has scored all X's and should be in every instructor's classroom kit right next to their lesson plans!" Warren Pelton Formerly of the NRA Training Dept. Currently with the Law Enforcement Alliance of America |

It's no surprise to an LEAA member to see yet another news item about violent crime. Although history clearly shows that the best way to reduce violent crime is to lock away the criminals, liberal legislators continue to put the blame everywhere else. In their ongoing crusade to outlaw everything but criminals, these individuals waste billions of dollars of taxpayer money and reduce the emphasis placed on personal responsibility and education. The truth of the matter is, there is far too much emphasis on "smart guns" and not enough on building "smarter people." The topics of criminal violence and gun control are among is the hottest issues debated today. From the White House to the small-town PTA meeting, people are asking the same types of questions: How do we reduce gun-related accidents? Can a gun help us be safer from crime? And, how do we increase gun safety, especially for kids? These are all good questions ones we must successfully address if we are to win the gun control debate. Almost 800,000 people each year look to the NRA for firearm safety training. But how do we reach out to the literally millions of citizens who aren't comfortable attending a class, who cannot afford the time or expense, or those straddling the fence who are just beginning to develop an interest in firearms or firearm safety? How do we provide kids with examples of responsible behavior to counter the endless display of lunatic behavior and unsafe gun handling shown on TV? In short, how do we wing the informational war and get our message out? The answer is computer technology. Modern multimedia has proven to be one of the most dramatic, effective and engaging methods of education &endash; especially for young people. Computers today can present digital video clips, much like watching videotape on your computer, but that is only the beginning. Three-dimensional animation has jumped from the Hollywood movie screen to the home computer, allowing you to step inside a working machine and examine its parts as they operate. In a leap that may seem closer to "Star Trek" than real life, today's desktop computer can allow a person to experience "virtual reality" environments. Much like the old room-sized simulators of the past, you can move through a photo-quality scene while you look in any direction and interact with people and things you discover. The possibilities are endless and the results, in terms of education and public safety, are priceless. Michael Marks, a longstanding LEAA Area Representative, came to this very conclusion. With the desire to create a cutting edge tool to help protect the Second Amendment he created such a product. The result is a stunning new CD-ROM titled "SafetyOn: The Comprehensive Guide to Firearm Safety and Responsible Handgun Ownership." SafetyOn is a rich, incredibly detailed program that covers almost every aspect of firearm basics, safety, personal defense, as well as shooting sports and firearm care and maintenance. This CD takes advantage of leading-edge technologies available for desktop and laptop computers. The program is extremely informative and entertaining at the same time, and the simple, outline-driven interface makes it a snap to use. Even first-time computer users will be zipping through the content moments after inserting the CD into their computer. But the real value in SafetyOn goes far beyond the eye-popping graphics and incredible visual effects. The value this product really brings is a well-researched and highly detailed training program that is realistic, balanced, up-to-date and unabashedly pro-Second Amendment and pro-law enforcement. From beginning to end, SafetyOn presents a unified message about the full-time nature of responsible gun ownership &endash; in a way that the message appeals to the critical, but often under-reached markets: young people, computer people, and people looking for gun safety information from non-traditional sources. One example of how this CD can affect the public policy debate is the in-depth coverage of secure firearm storage options. This CD presents people with the opportunity to learn the strengths and weaknesses of many different devices being pushed by manufacturers and legislators. It explains the hidden dangers in devices like trigger locks and points to alternatives that can provide even greater safety without exposing the user to unknown hazards. The fact is the issue of secure storage is going to affect the debate on the Second Amendment. If we can help keep firearms out of the hands of unsupervised children and un-educated or irresponsible adults we will be well on our way to winning the bigger "public policy" battle. This CD introduces information on Basics and Safety that spans the gap between the person new to handguns through the long-time gunner, providing a very broad and comprehensive understanding of Basics and Safety. While these chapters are outstanding, the Defense section is the crown jewel of the program. Defense begins with the premise that the best way to "win" any fight is to avoid it. While this simple truth is well known to LEAA Members, we must get this message out to others to help them recognize potential hazards and make themselves less attractive to a violent criminal. If we can help people avoid becoming victims of crime in the first place we will help advance our cause. The SafetyOn CD utilizes an outstanding "awareness" module that builds on a wildlife analogy. This module defines criminal attack through the roles of predator and prey. It highlights many options to help avoid falling into the "prey" classification. This rolls naturally into an interactive demonstration of the color-code "defense condition" model originally developed by Jeff Cooper and taught to law enforcement and military personnel. SafetyOn takes a very conservative and responsible approach to establishing the realities of criminal violence and the effectiveness of different response options. Well documented statistics cited throughout the program were taken directly from U.S. Department of Justice reports. The story is clear: an overwhelming majority of victims of violent crime reported that an effort to resist or fight back improved their situation. In contrast, the CD clearly illustrates the potentially dire hazards of some types of compliance, particularly when this involves moving to a secondary crime scene. The images and information are frank, with no punches pulled. While some may find this information disturbing, it is far better to discuss it and avoid it than deal with the ravages of violence after the fact. The Defense coverage extends through every phase of a violent encounter, from the initial attack to making a safe and liability-conscious 911 call, including law enforcement interaction after a defensive effort. The CD goes to great lengths to make civilians aware of issues of officer safety and provides guidance that should reduce the chance that an officer arrives at a scene finding a flustered homeowner behaving in an unsafe manner. In the same vein, SafetyOn presents their "Three A's of Police Interaction" -- Approach, Attitude and Actions. As part of "Approach," for example, drivers are encouraged to turn on interior lights and lower the driver's window. When an officer approaches the vehicle, you should keep your their hands on the steering wheel. This is a great reminder to citizens that everyone has an equal right to safety, and that common sense and a little courtesy makes a big difference. The content in SafetyOn goes far beyond the coverage which can be provided in any single article. In addition to all this, the CD's rich footage covers such topics as malfunction drills, speedloading, concealed carry options, drawstroke, target identification, and backstop considerations. Options about improving your defense -- both at home and on the street -- are presented. The content is truly comprehensive, and should appeal to the newcomer as well as the knowledgeable veteran. It is ideal for both individual study and for use by an instructor as a classroom aid. LEAA has been closely involved with this project from its beginning because we recognize that if we are going to continue to defend the Second Amendment we must take the fight into "non-traditional" areas. Not only will SafetyOn help carry this message into these markets, but also for every person who purchases a CD and mentions LEAA, SafetyOn will make a substantial contribution to LEAA to help in our fight. Michael Marks, the driving force behind SafetyOn, was the 1992 recipient of the LEAA's Outstanding Member of the Year Award. Mr. Marks was very active in LEAA's victory over Time-Warner, Inc. against the rap album "Cop Killer." He is also a volunteer member with the Washington County, MD Fire/Rescue Special Operations Team, and continues to donate his time as an Area Representative for LEAA. |

Joseph P. Tartaro, The New Gun Week, Dec 1, 1998 The official public unveiling of "SafetyOn", the extraordinary new, interactive, state-of-the-art CD-ROM handgun and safety training program, took place at the NRA annual meetings in Philadelphia in early June. But I had seen the work in progress during the Firearms Trade Expo in Columbus several weeks earlier, as the producers of this valuable new instructional vehicle fine tuned their product. The advance screening was part of the meticulous technological development and content review process for what became the most advanced and comprehensive handgun training and firearms safety presentation ever attempted. A lot of experts had input to this ambitious and creative effort. The finished product, "SafetyOn", combines 3D animation, virtual reality technology, voice-over and sound, computer graphics and text all in a user friendly straight-forward "map mode" system that offers shortcuts to any point in the entire CD. The viewer can move backward and forward through the entire program, taking as much time as desired, and linking subject matter to individual needs. The viewer can also click on different points within a master subject menu or directly on a screen image to get additional information. The entire program is divided into five major sections: Basics, Safety, Sports, Defense, and Care. These sections are displayed at the top of the screen, and a sub-directory menu appears at the left of the first screen for each section. Text appears below the visuals and a slider or other prompts leans one to detailed information. The "Basics" menu includes the following sub categories: American Heritage; Revolver; Semi-automatic; Ammunition; Grip & Position; Sights; Breathing; Trigger Squeeze; Follow-through, and Second Amendment. Fundamentals First As the title suggests, "Basics" establishes a fundamental understanding of what a firearm is, How it operates and what a firearms is and is not capable of doing. It deals with American history as well as scholarship on the right to keep and bears arms. However, as you click to specific subjects you are treated to extensive use of computer graphics that allow the viewer to see how a particular type of handgun operates, how the components interact, and what distinguishes a single-action revolver from a double action wheelgun. In the case of the semi-automatic, the 3d animation allows you to see the inside of the gun and its magazine as it is being fired, so that you see cartridges feed from the magazine to the chamber, be fired as the trigger is squeezed, then ejected and another round fed up to take its place. When the magazine is depleted , the slide locks open. This sequence is accompanied with appropriate text and you see springs move and parts interact. What is more, the 3D in motion aspects allow rotation of the subject and virtual reality technology allows the viewer to see a working firearm from angles that would be neither safe nor possible on a range. This capability adds an extraordinary realism, especially to the self-defense and sport sequences. In the "Sports" section the viewer can see almost every known type of handgun competition, from bullseye to practical shooting, from Cowboy Action shooting to silhouette matches. The wrap-around virtual reality technology allows the user to step into the scene and look around in all directions, just as one would with a real life presence at the event. One can hear the actual range commands and see what the response to those commands is all on location in a real match scenario. And one can study and review at one's own pace. Whenever desired, the viewer can drag the mouse to compare the fine points of a subject under study, or click on the mouse. In fact one in never more than three clicks away from any other part of the whole CD-ROM. Personal Record An unusual feature, is the ability of this interactive program to maintain a complete record of individual user's progress and even alert him or her if any content is overlooked. This especially valuable for students. With the SafetyOn CD-ROM one can look at the components of each type of competition and get directions to the governing body of the particular sport for further information or the date and location of matches. One can get similar brief description of the various pro-gun organizations, along with their addresses, phone numbers , and websites. "SafetyOn is the ultimate marriage of firearm safety training and modern multimedia." Said Michael Marks, head of the creative development team that included experts in the fields of firearms safety, civilian and police firearms training and 3D computer graphics. This content-rich program contains thousands and thousands of pictures, including original photography, digital video, illustrations and three dimensional animation. It offers a wealth of information for both the newcomer and the experienced gunowner. Indeed there is so much information that one can spend hours with the SafetyOn CD, interactively using the program to the best individual preference. I loaned my sample review copy of the CD to various people who had differing levels of experience with firearms. They all found it extremely useful, with each usually finding different sections more compelling to them than others. But they all thought it a valuable tool for the basic pistol and personal protection classes, and they found that segments on firearms storage and cleaning offered unusual insights. One of the objectives of Red Hat Publishing, the producers of the SafetyOn CD-ROM, was to help parents give their children a healthy and realistic understanding, appreciation and respect for firearms and their lawful use, to counter the misinformation and bad gun-handling seen on television and in movies every day. From beginning to end, SafetyOn maintains a clear focus on personal responsibility, and the importance of insuring one's own safety as well as that of others. Another purpose was to provide a comprehensive, interactive information source for firearms instructors, using the latest computerized technologies. They have succeeded admirably in fulfilling their mission. SafetyOn is a product that will continue to serve for many years to come, one that benefits the whole firearms community and de-mystifies the subject for newcomers. |

Diane Weber, The VSSA Bullett, Nov. 1998
An intriguing new product on firearms safety has recently hit the market which may revolutionize firearms training. Introduced last June by Red Hat Publishing, "SafetyOn" is an interactive, comprehensive, in-depth guide to handguns and firearm safety developed with the assistance of some of the nations largest and most respected law enforcement organizations. It is designed to provide anyone, regardless of prior firearm knowledge, with a solid understanding of what a firearm is, how it operates, and the rules of firearm safety. This information is presented in five chapters: Basics, Safety, Sports, Defense and Care. SafetyOn highlights that responsible gun ownership extends beyond personal gun handling capabilities. Secure firearm storage-not more governmental legislation- is an absolutely indispensable part of being a safe gun-owner and is the best way to keep firearms out of the hands of unsupervised children and irresponsible adults. The CD demonstrates numerous firearm storage and gun-lock systems, pointing out both strength and weaknesses of each alternative. There is a detailed section on formal and informal shooting sports, as well as firearm care and maintenance. Perhaps one of the most highly acclaimed sections deals with Personal Defense. This section starts with the premise that the best way to "win" a violent encounter is to avoid it. This premise is supported by an extensive look at awareness and crime-avoidance strategies. The CD presents a real-world look at the strengths and weaknesses of "less lethal" self defense alternative. SafetyOn covers every phase of surviving a criminal attack by presenting information on effectiveness, safety, and liability. This program will introduce responsible and safe gun ownership to people both inside and outside the gun community. Computer technology has a proven ability to reach out and capture the attention of people of all ages. This represents a great opportunity to convey the message of firearm safety to Americas young people and reduce gun accidents. This CD-ROM assembles a broad scope of realistic, responsible information and presents it in such an engaging and easy-to-understand format. 3D-animation, digital video, and "virtual reality" technologies combine to provide an incredible look at this important topic. Anyone who owns a firearm or is interested in knowing more about firearm safety will benefit from this program. |
